WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN?// Different Contexts (1/5)

Here is some design appearing in different contexts;

- An exhibition space, here Graphics is used to introduce an art space. It is also use for the descriptive text, booklets, maps and in some cases to improve the general aesthetics of the room.

- On a billboard. Here graphics is used to promote a message, to advertise and/or inform, in a pleasant, shocking or inspiring manner.

- In a newspaper. Again graphic designers are creating the layout and typography involved in the design. Each newspaper has a specific tone it has to take with its readers, here it is 'modern and informative', hence the simplistic design. "I" can symbolise the name of the paper as well as meaning 'information' in many peoples minds.

- Online. Online is a relatively new context to find graphic design in. For many of the early years websites were not designed professionally causing early websites to look clumsy and cluttered. More recently however as computers and bandwidth becomes more powerful web based design has taken off, offering a much more user friendly interface for web users.

- On a shopfront. High-street shopfronts have had to change and adapt as much as any other, they ware often huge spaces of graphic design. As out of town shopping becomes more and more popular, shopfronts like this one have had to really stand out to draw in a crowd. A true challenge for designers.
